Most commercial properties are required to have backflow meters tested and certified every year. Failure to comply can result in interruption of your business and substantial fines.

Backflow Testing

The water supply running to homes and businesses is normally under pressure, but situations can occur that cause the water pressure to drop and the water flow to reverse. This is known as backflow. When backflow occurs, the water drawn back into your main water supply may be contaminated. It remains in the lines until it is drained from another fixture on the premise, which creates a potential health hazard. This is why Ohio requires all businesses and residential/commercial sprinkler systems to have an annual backflow test. If not tested annually, service could be interrupted.

To ensure safety, the Ohio Basic Plumbing Code states that backflow devices must be tested upon installation, following repairs, and at least annually. The testing must be performed by a Certified Backflow Tester.

Common backflow situation and prevention tips:

Soapy water or other cleani ed in a bucket or laundry basin.
Prevention tip: Install an American Society of Sanitary Engineers
Fertilizers/pesvrden hose attached to a fertilizer/pesticide sprayer.
Prevention tip: Install an ASSE* 1011 approved vacuum breaker.

Chemical/pesticides/animal feces are drawn into your supply from a lawn irrigation system.
Prevention tip: Contact Nixco Plumbing. Lawn irrigation systems require a testable backflow device. This device should be tested annually to ensure reliability.
