Memorial Day is once again on the horizon. As we prepare to honor the memory of our nation’s heroes, we seldom think of things like hot showers or clean drinking water. Why would we? One good reason to think of these things is because of the brave men that fought for our freedom during the Civil War were not provided with these simple comforts.
It is due to them, however, that we have these simple comforts today! It is for that reason, and so many others, that we celebrate Memorial Day. It’s so important to show our gratitude for all the brave men and women who have sacrificed for us. At NixCo Plumbing Inc. we hold Memorial Day very close to our hearts because of all of the amazing opportunities we are privileged to have because of these courageous men.
It Was Once Decoration Day
Prior to becoming a Federal holiday in 1971, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day. Just as it sounds, Decoration Day was a time to honor the memory of the Civil War soldiers by decorating their graves and memorials.
Though many believe that Decoration Day was celebrated prior to the end of the Civil War, it was a few years after the end of the war that John A. Logan dedicated May 30th as day to honor these great men. Expanding over time, many communities would come together to plant flowers, recite speeches, and hang flags to commiserate the fallen soldiers.
As we pushed into the twentieth century, celebrations of the unofficial start of summer started to coincide with Decoration Day. When Congress declared Decoration Day (now officially Memorial Day) to be a Federal holiday in 1971, we had also included barbeques and parades as part of the long weekend celebrations; as the holiday was now held on the last Monday of May.
Give Appreciation to the Armed Forces
Just as our celebrations of Decoration Day grew with the times, so did the recipients of the tributes. Though started as a holiday to remember the soldiers of the Civil War, Memorial Day is now a time to remember all of our Armed Forces men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Each year, it is not only important to show our gratitude to these soldiers but to show our support to the family members and loved ones of more recent conflicts. Our Military has long defended our liberty, freedom, and justice. It is because of each of these valiant men and women that we have our Democracy in place today.
