Water Leak Detection Tactics

Ways to Detect a Water Leak in Your Home

Water leaks in your home can cause a lot of damage, but they don’t always reveal themselves with a tell-tale puddle or wet spot. Here are three ways to detect a water leak in your home.

Check Your Water Bill

If you suspect you have a leak but can’t find evidence, you can check your water bill. If your bill is higher than it usually is and you can’t find any other reason, it could be because of a hidden water leak.

Conversely, if you notice your water bill is suddenly significantly higher than normal, and there isn’t any probable cause, you should investigate whether you might have a leak.

Bubbling or Peeling Paint or Wallpaper

Often, if a pipe leaks in a wall or underneath your floor, you will notice a wet area. But in some cases, the water does not make itself apparent. In those cases, there may be other signs.

For instance, if you have paint or wallpaper that is bubbling or peeling, it could be a sign that there is water underneath causing the problem.

The same thing could happen to your floors. If you have hardwood, laminate or vinyl flooring, you might also notice bubbling if there is a leaking pipe underneath.

A Leak in Your Toilet

Toilet leaks can be readily apparent. If you hear running water in the tank or notice water running into the bowl when you haven’t flushed, you probably have a leak. However, you can have a very slow leak in your toilet that isn’t noticeable.

To find such a leak, you can do a simple test. Put a few drops of food coloring into your toilet tank and then let it sit for at least an hour without flushing it. Then check the bowl to see if any food coloring has shown up there. If it has, then you have a very slow leak.

Because water leaks can do tremendous damage in your home, including causing mold growth, it’s important to find them as quickly as possible. If you think you have a hidden leak, you should try these and other methods to discover it.
